Lasting Memories

Lasting Memories is an exhibition focusing on people living with Alzheimer’s and how it effects their memories in different ways. Over the last couple of months I have been getting to know the residents in The Grange Care Home Rennington, beside Alnwick which is near to where I live. I am fascinated with their memories and stories from events in their lives many years ago.
After months of research into Alzheimer’s this is the idea I came up with.
The Installation has two parts to it with the first being the images you will come across along the pier, seven in total. These images are all naturally taken as I wanted to capture the persons true expression.
Behind the images in the sea, are floating bottles containing a memory of each resident. This is symbolic of the romantic notion of people lost at sea sending a message to their loved ones to find. As the tide comes in and goes out so will the memory in the bottle to the portrait portraying how Alzheimer’s can work sometimes. Each bottle will also be illuminated with a gradually diminishing light source, which is representative of the fading clarity of the memory.
